TBT with, Linkin Park

Picture this; You’re riding the coastline with your homies, the best song comes on the radio and you raise the volume. You feel the ocean breeze against you and absorb the dope vibes while you party like it's 1999. You act like fools and could give two shits what anyone thinks as today my friends, is a great day!

On the flip side, when your emotions have the best of you, regardless of the reasons, there’s always a tune that you can relate to. Whether it's the song that your ex so graciously played for you or the song that helped you get over them, there is a special (or not so special) tune to relate to. Often, music tells the tale of what one might be suffering with, for example, Linkin Parks, Chester Bennington.

Chester Bennington was best known as the lead singer of several bands including, Linkin Park and Stone Temple Pilots. Going through his entire career is pointless, that can be googled. I'm here to ask you to look a little deeper. Recently on American Idol, Katy Perry stated; "Some of the greatest artists have become artists because they’ve had the most pain in their life. It's about, if you can take that pain and turn it into a purpose”.

From the time Chester was about 7 or 8 years old, he was sexually abused. It doesn’t take an expert to see how this could lead to his (very open) battle with addiction and depression. The third single from their debut album, "Crawling,” in my opinion, definitely spoke of the battles that Chester fought daily. "Crawling in my skin; These wounds, they will not heal. Fear is how I fall; Confusing what is real”. Music can and does speak volumes.

In Linkin Parks’ last album, was "One More Light,” his final goodbye? The lyrics are touching as he sang; "Who cares if one more light goes out? In a sky of a million stars; It flickers, flickers. Who cares when someone's time runs out?” On July 20, 2017, Chester ended his time on earth. Some may say it was similar to that of his close friend Chris Cornell, especially since Chester left the earth on Chris’ birthday. Chester left behind 6 children and a beautiful wife. Imagine the pain that he must have felt, a pain deep enough to leave it all behind.

My opinion stands as; Linkin Park was dope. They did what they wanted, when they wanted and everyone else could suck it. They expressed themselves through their tunes making history along the way. Music tells a story, a story some can’t see. Music is an out, an expression, and a medium to what might or could be. Linkin Park is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of “Hybrid Theory,” with a “Super Deluxe Box Set”, which includes CD’s, DVD’s, LP’s, posters and more. Visit Linkin Parks’ website for details.
