Slack-key Guitar With Ron Orden

Some may ask, what the heck is, Slack-key guitar? I sure as sugar asked and this is what I found! Slack-key guitar is also known as, ki ho ‘alu. This is a fingerstyle genre of guitar music that originated in Hawaii. I feel like since I have lived there, I should know this but yea, ya girl had no clue!

I met Ron M. Orden, last week at one of my favorite spots for live music and dope food called, Partake. He was quickly introduced to me and schooled me on this very unique and intriguing style of music. Ron then welcomed me to watch him play and I was immediately sucked into the slack-key trance.

In 1832, the first vaqueros cowboys, from Mexico, arrived on the Big Island of Hawaii. They brought their spanish guitars, one thing led to another, and BAM…slack-key was born. Ron was intrigued by this style of music and began to learn the history behind it. He continued to practice while earning himself gigs at local eateries and hotels. Today, you catch Orden jammin’ out on stages across California teaching any and everyone the beauty behind Slack-key guitar.
