Music Made Easy With Len Collins

“When you have the correct knowledge, you can rule the world. I give my students the knowledge they need to be musically successful.” #inspiration #music #read #guitar #practice

As creator of the Stave Breakthrough Method, 2004, Guinness Book Of World Records title holder, Author of The Music Readers Toolbox, and the proud father to Daniel Collins (London based countertenor with The Sixteen, Music Director and Producer), Len Collins is far from done. His goal is to soon be in Uganda teaching children to read music with speed!

Len started out like most humans do, normal life and uninterested in school. His interest in music began when a class friend simply asked him to be in a band. Len admits; “When my friend asked me if I wanted to be in a band it was more of a sure, why not. I had agreed to play bass but my parents got me a cheap 6 string guitar. I was rubbish but kept practicing until well, I was not so rubbish”.

Len began performing throughout London. He admits to having a unique mindset prior to going on stage. “I have to be nervous when I perform; I never rehearse, If I rehearse I have to remember things that later I would forget, so I walked on stage every night and played live. When I first started learning guitar, I didn’t understand what I was supposed to be playing [chords] but I refused to give up. I researched why chords and modes worked the way that they do and practiced until I became great.”

Collins continued to practice sharpening his string skills. He began playing gigs to the extent of exhaustion. Len admits to having “no stop button”, keeping him in constant, practice makes perfect mode. Years of gigging all day, every day, for years had taken its toll on him. Len decided to take it easy and supply personal guitar lessons to the children of his friends. This blew up faster than metal in a microwave. Collins was soon teaching tons of kids how to successfully read music with speed. Len’s talent eventually earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records, for the Largest Guitar Lesson in 2004.

“I offer a simpler version of teaching. When you read a book, you are scanning ahead for the next word, this is the same concept with music. You must educate your brain to read music differently. If a whole note is four (4) beats, this means you have four beats before playing the next note, to look ahead to see what’s next. You have to train your brain to look ahead. At the heart of The Music Readers Toolbox, is the Stave Breakthrough Method, which is a unique method for sight reading music with speed. The Music Readers Toolbox, is for beginners, professionals, or anyone wanting to improve their sight reading of music, singers, instrumentalists and, of course, playing guitar.”

Today, Len is prepping for a move to Kachomo, Uganda. Collins will be running the music department at the KDF Music School, while overseeing the teachers who will be utilizing the Music Readers Toolbox, for foundation and development. Although COVID has delayed the construction of the school, plans are still in action with an estimated opening date of early, 2021. The KDF Sports Academy as well as Agricultural Department are looking for sponsors to help with uniforms, a bus, and agricultural machinery.

Len Collins has a dream, a goal, and a mission to help all musicians learn to quickly and accurately read sight music. Collins explained; “My goal is to improve sight reading skills which will result in accomplished musicians who will be successful. Through the Stave Breakthrough Method, I can help more musicians overcome their anxiety when faced with sight reading music. I encourage my students to be creative, independent, and knowledgeable. I’m not in this for the money; I just love watching my students grow from beginners to confident musicians”.
