The award show, which aired on Nov. 28, honored the contributions and achievements of many of the R&B and soul industry’s best. Ashanti took to the stage to accept the award, and while thanking her loved ones, she said ,"A lot of people didn’t think I’d make it this far…Some people may look at my journey and think it was easy. It was not”.
"My career has been filled with so many peaks and valleys, and it definitely wasn’t easy. I’ve been blessed to have broken records, won awards and toured the world,” Ashanti said in her speech.
Ashanti spoke about how this award felt like a full-circle moment to receive because it came almost 20 years after she received the Aretha Franklin Entertainer of the Year Award in 2002. The singer is celebrating 20 years of her self-titled album and receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year, which she excitedly mentioned in her speech.
Ashanti ended her speech by highlighting the importance of supporting and uplifting women; “I will continue to keep pushing, keep thriving, keep following my dreams, continue to put music out, provide for my community, and support up-and-coming female writers and singers. It’s all about women’s empowerment y’all”.
Later in the awards show, Ashanti returned to the stage to perform a medley of her greatest hits, which included "Happy,” "Rain On Me,” "Foolish,” and "Always On Time”.
