9 Killed At Houston Music Festival
A performance by rapper Travis Scott quickly turned tragic as a crowd surged toward the stage at the Astroworld Music Festival in Houston, leaving at least nine people dead and dozens more injured.
An estimated 50,000 people were in attendance at the first night of the sold-out, two-day festival in NRG Park. As Scott’s set began, people pushed forward to the front of the stage, making it difficult for many of the attendees to move and even breathe.
The nine people that were killed in the chaos of the crowd ranged from age 14 to 27. Among those who were injured, 25 were initially taken to local hospitals by ambulance, the youngest of them being a 10-year-old.
Scott attended a party at Dave & Buster’s after his performance, unaware of the deaths and injuries during the concert. When someone informed Scott of the tragedy, he immediately left the party. Scott took to social media early Saturday morning in a tweet to express his commitment in “working together with the Houston Community to heal and support the families in need”. That same morning, Astroworld posted a statement to their instagram account announcing that as they are focusing on working with local officials, the rest of the festival would be cancelled. In an emotional Instagram video posted Saturday evening, Scott claims to have not known the severity of the situation, which is why he didn’t stop the show.
The rapper, who has a history of encouraging violence at concerts, has been arrested and charged twice previously over music festivals in Chicago in 2015 and Arkansas in 2017 where he incited riots during his shows leaving several people injured. Following Scott’s statement, Kylie Jenner, Scott’s girlfriend, also took to social media on Saturday night to issue a statement on her Instagram Stories. She claims that she and Scott “weren’t aware of any fatalities until the news came out after the show”.
